New Movie Reviews: Bride Wars, Unborn, and Not Easily Broken Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway set aside their professional self-respect and engage in some profoundly unfunny Bride Wars. A demonic spirit wants entrance to our world in the horror film The Unborn. And unrelenting melodrama finds its way to the Bishop T.D. Jakes in Not Easily Broken. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Che, The Wrestler, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Gran Torino, Revolutionary Road, Marley & Me, Bedtime Stories, The Spirit, and Valkyrie. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films In Theaters in our Movie Talk Forum.

TV on DVD: Get Smart, Wagon Train, and Studio One
2008 was a great year for TV on DVD and 2009 is shaping up to be just as exciting. Some of the newest TV series reviews include: Get Smart: The Complete Series - the show remains one of the funniest half-hours you can find and this extensive, borderline exhaustive five-season set is well worth its hefty price tag; Wagon Train - The Complete Color Season - one of the superior dramas of late 50s, early 60s television - just plain well-written, superiorly-acted, flat-out entertaining oaters, distinguished by complex, character-driven stories; and Studio One Anthology - must viewing for anyone interested in the roots of American network TV, as well as the development of American drama. Other shows recently reviewed include: Metalocalypse - Season 2, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Vol. 6, and M Squad - The Complete Series. Want more? Recently Announced Discs: Last Metro, Changling, and Room 222 2009 is shaping up to be a good year for film buffs with several key titles being released in high definition and SD DVD. Recently announced DVDs and Blu-rays of note include: Last Metro (Criterion Collection) - Gerard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve star in this film directed by François Truffaut. 'Nuff said. It will hit shelves on 03-24-09; Clint Eastwood's true crime film Changeling arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on 02-17-09; and the classic dramedy TV show Room 222-Season One featuring Karen Valentine arrives on 03-24-09 thanks to Shout! Factory. Keep track of all the upcoming DVDs with the DVDTalk Release List.

DVD Savant: Bottle Rocket, Chamber of Horrors & The Brides of Fu Manchu, and Dona Flor This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Bottle Rocket (Blu-ray) - Wes Anderson's breakthrough comedy hasn't lost a single quirk, and looks terrific in the clarity of Blu-ray. Criterion's extras contain the entire original short subject version; Chamber of Horrors & The Brides of Fu Manchu - Another Warners Horror Double Feature offering. The first is an amusing murder spree in old Baltimore with Patrick O'Neal in fine form as a homicidal maniac. Don Sharp's first Fu Manchu sequel is an okay period thriller starring Christopher Lee; and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands - Bruno Barreto's Original Director's Cut of this wonderful, sexy Sonia Braga fantasy is even spicer. With an improved transfer. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable DVDs: Michael Powell, Last Emperor, and Frisky Dingo 2009 is upon us, and as usual for this time of year the DVD releases are a bit slow. There are still a few discs worth checking out however. Some of this week's more notable releases include: The Films of Michael Powell [review] - includes A Matter of Life and Death, simply one of the most remarkable English language films of the 20th century and Age of Consent a fittingly bittersweet swan song by a master filmmaker; The Last Emperor (Criterion Collection) (Blu-ray) [review]- a monumental achievement that plays more impressive than ever; and Frisky Dingo - Season 2 [review]- one of the crown jewels of Adult Swim, the show has a sort of giddy take no prisoners approach to virtually every sacred cow imaginable make this show a goldmine for those who like their satire steaming hot and preferably a little on the bitter side. Other releases of note include: Battlestar Galactica - Season 4.0, The Tudors - Season 2 [review], and Pineapple Express. Be sure to check out our DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week.

New DVD Reviews: Appaloosa, Redneck Zombies, Death Race Though the DVD releases may have slowed in the post-holiday season, DVDTalk's review panel continues to crank out the critiques. New DVD reviews include: Appaloosa - a strong period piece and a genuinely rousing adventure; Redneck Zombies: 20th Anniversary Edition - Troma releases this gore-drenched goof so that a new generation can discover its outrageous wonders; and Death Race - Relentlessly over-the-top and aggressively violent, this film is diverting popcorn fare. Other recent reviews include: Azteca La Piedra del Sol, Tora-san 38: Tora-san Goes North, and The Story of the Yardbirds. The Best and Worst Theatrical releases of 2008 DVDTalk reviewer Brian Orndorf sees a lot of movies in the theater. A LOT. Averaging four or five films a week, he sees just about everything that comes out that's worth seeing, and a lot that isn't. Looking back on 2008, Brian came up with his lists of the best and worst theatrical releases of the year. While there are a lot of films you would expect on the lists (is anyone surprised that the Paris Hilton vehicle the Hottie and the Nottie ended up on the worst list?) there are some pleasant surprises too. Be sure to check out The Best Theatrical Releases of 2008 and The Worst Theatrical Releases of 2008. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films In Theaters in our Movie Talk Forum.

DVDTalk's Top 20 discs of 2008 Looking back on it, 2008 was a pretty good year for movies, both theatrically and on home video. From big budget Hollywood superhero flicks to foreign films and classic movies the past year saw some great releases. The DVD Talk review panel got together to pick the best of the best of 2008, and after two rounds of voting and much gnashing of teeth, this is the result. There are some surprising choices, and some truly great releases didn't quite make it, but that's what happens when you get a group of film geeks together. In any case, all of the entries are top-notch movies and TV shows that deserve a little extra time in the spotlight. Be sure to see if your favorite release made the list. Check out DVDTalk's Top 20 Discs of 2008.
